The 1990's Trilogy: Portfolio

The 1990's

The 1990’s Trilogy is an illustrated series based on the the music video set released by the music collective “Brockhampton.”

Originally inspired from the release of the song “1999 Wildfire,” this project began initially as an admiration for the use of composition in the corresponding music video. However as more of the songs were released under a similar fashion, I realized that this series would make a wonderful set once finished, and as the releases continued, I looked out for instances in the content that struck me as especially noteworthy and/or inspiring.

The “1998 Truman” illustration was originally a different illustration altogether, but as I felt it wasn’t in line tonally or compositionally with the previous work, I reexamined the video and found a source that fit my interests better. The isolation of the central character is wonderfully framed and leaves the viewer with a slightly gloomy and secluded feeling, where one doesn't need full context of where this illustration came from in order to understand.

Lastly, the work based on the final song “1997 Diana” released as the third illustration in this series, and became the most daunting task. While the other illustrations were a challenge for their abundance of background information and detail, this illustration heavily focused on the human components of the frame. Stylistically it reads very differently than its sister illustrations—which are very background oriented—but that is also the core of what makes this piece stand on its own legs.
